A Guide to February 2024 Photo Awards & Opportunities

PhMuseum 2024 Photography Grant, CENTER Santa Fe, ShowOFF, Autograph Open Call, Eyes Wide Open 1st Photo Book Grant, Athens Photo Festival, Peer Matters, CAP Prize and Kranj Foto Fest are among the opportunities we selected this month.

PhMuseum 2024 Photography Grant

Deadline 15 February / Entry fee €35

Since 2013, the PhMuseum Photography Grant has been championing visual projects awarding photographers such as Max Pinckers, Jacob Aue Sobol, Alejandro Cartagena, Bieke Depoorter, Salvatore Vitale and many more. Now at its 12th edition, independent jurors David Campany, Penelope Umbrico, Lebohang Kganye and Kensuke Koike will assign four cash prizes amounting to €10,000. Three solo shows at festivals and exhibition venues will be awarded by their curators: one at PhEST (Monopoli, Italy), one at Getxophoto (Getxo, Spain) and one at PhMuseum Lab (Bologna, Italy) during Arte Fiera, while all shortlisted artists will have their work projected at International Photo Festivals. Plus, every submitted project is considered by our team for features and articles on PhMuseum and promotion through our channels and weekly newsletter, with 6 photographers receiving free portfolio reviews.

To participate, you are invited to submit one or more projects centred around a specific theme or narrative. All approaches are welcome from traditional documentary photography to experimental ways of telling a story or sharing a concept.

CENTER Santa Fe Calls for Entry

Deadline 25 February / Entry fee €32-65

The nonprofit organisation CENTER engages in supporting projects throughout their many phases of development. A total of $20,000 is awarded in project funding, divided into various categories catering for the different stages of a photographer's path: the ME&EVE Award ($2,500 in support to a female or LGBTQ+ photographer aged 40 and above), Development Grant (a $5,000 grant for works-in-progress), Launch Grant (a $7,500 grant for complete projects or series), Excellence in Teaching Award (a $5,000 award honoring the contributions of photo educators). The Blue Earth Fiscal Sponsorship awards documentary photographers and filmmakers working on critical environmental and social issues, while four additional categories recognize the diversity of photographic storytelling: Multimedia Award, Personal Award, Socially Engaged Award and Environmental Award. Last, selected authors will have chance to join the Review Santa Fe Photo Symposium.

Eyes Wide Open 1st Photo Book Grant 2024

Deadline 29 February / No entry fee

The Eyes Wide Open 1st Photo Book Grant program offers support to 3 book projects by a photographer and his/her publisher, each with €5,000. It is divided into 3 categories, each meeting a specific need: SAIF grant for a French photographer or a photographer living in France, a grant dedicated to a woman photographer of any nationality, and a grant for a photographer from a southern region (Africa, Caribbean, Southeast Asia, Latin America, Middle East). To participate, the author must provide a letter of commitment from a French publisher.

Kranj Foto Fest Open Call

Deadline 14 February / No entry fee

This year, the Slovenian Festival's call for entries has no thematic limitations. Aneta Kowalczyk and Grzegorz Kosmala (Blow Up Press), Carol Körting (Leica Fotografie International), Christina Töpfer (Camera Austria International), Marina Paulenka (Fotografiska Berlin), Fernanda Prado Verčič (Kranj Foto Fest), Barbara Čeferin (Galerija Fotografija) and Ciril Jazbec (Documentary Photographer) will select one winner who for a solo show in Kranj with all production costs covered, plus a €1,000 cash prize, travel expenses of up to €400 and lodging for 3 nights during the opening week (August 2024). All shortlisted finalists will have their works produced and featured in group exhibitions around the picturesque alpine town, also receiving lodging for 3 nights.

FE + SK Book Award 2024

Deadline 2 February / Entry fee €10

Submissions are still open for the FE+SK Book Award, presented by festival Fotografia Europea together with publishing house Skinnerboox, specialised in contemporary photography and visual arts. The jury comprises Milo Montelli (founder of Skinnerboox), Tim Clark (artistic director of Fotografia Europea) and Chiara Capodici (Leporello photobooks) who will select a project to be published by Skinnerboox and presented during the opening days of the festival in Reggio Emilia, Italy in April 2024. The book will be printed in a 500 copies run.

ShowOFF 2024 by Krakow Photomonth

Deadline 17 February / Entry fee €30

As one of the main parts of the Krakow Photomonth Festival programme, the ShowOFF Section is looking for projects which have never been presented in the form of a solo or group exhibition at a leading art institution (i.e. museum or art gallery engaged in the promotion of artists). The prize for each of the 6 winners is an individual exhibition during the Krakow Photomonth Festival in June 2024 with a budget of PLN 3,500,000 (€ 800). Individuals may submit up to two photography or film and video projects.

Return2Ithaca 2024 Residency Program

Deadline 18 February / Entry fee €19

R2I is looking for 5 photographers to join the list of 10 who will participate in R2I 2024 Residency Program from August to September 2024 in Ithaca, Greece. The 2024 theme is Somewhere Called Home. Selected artists will be granted accommodation, lectures on the Odyssey and the history of Ithaca, organized tours on the island's paths with local guides, workshops, and discussions with the curators evolving the initial idea of the depiction of Odyssey. At the end of the residency, a presentation of the produced works (as installations, exhibitions, or projections) will be organized by R2I’s team.

Belfast Photo Festival 2024 Open Call

Deadline 23 February / Entry fee €23-29

Belfast Photo Festival is selecting photographers to exhibit in the Irish festival's main gallery and at the 2024 Photo Schweiz in Zurich, Switzerland. Winners will be eligible for a number of awards, including a cash prize of £2,000 (€2,337) and a feature in the arts magazine Abridged. The jury team is composed of Damarice Amao (Curator, Centre Pompidou), Mirjam Kooiman (Curator, Foam), Irene Lombardo (Cultural Project Manager, Magnum Photos), Jessica Baxter (Assistant Curator, TATE Modern), Meaghan Looram (Director of Photography, The New York Times), Brendan McCleary (Curator, PHOTO 2024 International Festival of Photography), Michael Famighetti (Editor, Aperture Magazine) and Michael Weir (Director, Belfast Photo Festival).

Autograph Open Call Heritage and Culture

Deadline 5 February / No entry fee

Authograph will consider submissions for events on the theme Heritage and Culture, celebrating the photography of Bandele ‘Tex’ Ajetunmobi whose work is part of Autograph's collection. The open call is intended to support emerging cultural producers who are working on a new or early stage project. The successful applicant will receive a budget of £1,000 (€1,168) to make their event happen at Autograph's gallery in London or online.

Peer Matters

Deadline 12 February / No entry fee

Peer Matters is an artist-led development programme facilitated by Eva Jonas, Ezra Evans and Marguerite Minnot Thomas, and supported by Photoworks. Early & mid-career photographic artists (not currently in education) residing in the UK are welcome to apply. Applicants have to be interested in collaborative methods of learning and in the midst of developing a body of work. Selected artists will get the chance to expand and develop their creative practice and embrace the potentials of learning from their peers within a community. 

Peer Matters Open Call will run until 12 February, with no entry fee. Find out more on their website.

CAP Prize 2024

Deadline 7 February / No entry fee

The CAP Prize is open to all photographers working on the African continent or engaging with a diaspora of an African country dating back not more than two generations. A panel of international curators, publishers, editors, and artists will select 25 shortlisted works and 5 prize winners, who will have the chance to exhibit in collaboration with international photography institutions and events, and attend at least one of them with all expenses covered. Additionally, their works will be featured in a catalogue and published in respected media around the globe.

Call for Artists Athens Photo Festival 2024

Deadline 5 February / Entry fee €25

The call is now open to take part in Athens Photo Festival's next edition, running from June 4 to July 28 2024 in the Greek capital. The main program will take place at the Benaki Museum, exhibiting 80 selected artists. Plus, 20 authors will be invited to present their work at a screening event, 15 artists will have the opportunity to participate for free in the portfolio reviews, and other 5 in the APhF Talent Lab, a professional development program for emerging artists. The festival will cover the production costs for the selected works featured in the exhibition, as well as accommodation for two nights for participating artists.

FORMAT24 Presents Open Call / Deadline 18 February / No entry fee

Format and LCB Depot welcome diverse and imaginative proposals and projects from photographers and artists that relate to the theme Future Now. Selected artists will have the opportunity to exhibit their work in QUAD’s Extra Gallery Spaces in Derby and LCB Depot in Leicester, UK. Work submitted must be finished projects and ready to display by the exhibition date.  

Revela'T Portfolio Review 2024 / Deadline 12 February / Entry fee €20

Revela'T Festival is looking for 18 talented individuals to share their projects to a panel of 10 distinguished experts from the photographic field during the portfolio reviews that will take place on Friday 24 May, in Vilassar de Dalt (Barcelona, Spain). From all the projects screened, one will be selected to participate as an exhibition in the Revela’t 2025 festival. The festival will take care of the production, setup, and expenses related to the exhibition.

Liquida Photofestival Grant / Deadline 12 February / Entry fee €25-40

The best photographic projects received in the open call will be part of the 3rd edition of Liquida Photofestival, which will be hosted on May 2024 in the majestic and evocative spaces of the Cavallerizza Complex, Turin, Italy, and in other partner locations. A jury of new photography professionals will select the 10 best single shots, thus restoring the power of the image in narrating the kaleidoscope of contemporaneity.

Der Greif - Guest Room: Tina Campt & Keisha Scarville / Deadline 15 February / Entry fee €8

The current edition of Guest Room invites artists to explore the theme Poetics of Darkness. Black feminist theorist of visual culture and contemporary art Tina Campt has joined forces with photo-based artist Keisha Scarville in this call for projects dealing with images that activate shadow and darkness not as a negative void, but as dynamic and expressive space. In relation to its 15th anniversary, Der Greif is implementing a Guest Room Scholarship, sponsored by MPB: an artist stipend of €1,000 to one of the selected submitters of each upcoming Guest Room.
