A Guide to August 2023 Photo Awards & Open Calls

Paris Photo-Aperture PhotoBook Awards, The Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant, KBr Photo Award, Charta Award, Exposure International Open Call and Aesthetica Art Prize are among the opportunities we selected this month.

Paris Photo-Aperture PhotoBook Awards 2023

Deadline 8 September / Entry fee €27-54

The Paris Photo–Aperture PhotoBook Awards have been celebrating photographic publishing since 2012, considering its contribution to the evolving narratives of photography. Three different categories are open for applications: The First PhotoBook Prize, awarding a $10,000 prize to a photographer whose first book was made publicly available this year, the PhotoBook of the Year Prize, awarded jointly to a photographer and respective publisher, and the Photography Catalog of the Year Prize, awarded to a publisher and/or organizing institution responsible for the winning exhibition catalogue or museum publication. Twenty books from the first category, ten from the second one and five from the third one will be exhibited during Paris Photo as part of the shortlist.

The Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant

Deadline 1 September / No entry fee

Started in honour of photojournalist Ian Parry who died on assignment for The Sunday Times during the Romanian revolution in 1989 at the age of 24, The Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant supports young photographers as they enter the world of photojournalism. Recipients will receive a £10,000 (€11610 approx.) scholarship and ongoing support in terms of equipment loans, portfolio reviews, mentorship, assignments, as well as exhibition and publication opportunities, all aimed at funding the recipient’s ongoing work. The Tom Stoddard Award for Excellence is being also awarded at the judges’ discretion. Applicants must be 24 years of age or younger, or enrolled in a full-time photographic course at the time of entry, and they must submit a clear proposal of a project they would undertake if they were selected by the Grant.

KBr Photo Award 2023

Deadline 1 September / No entry fee

Organized by the Fundación MAPFRE, the KBr Photo Award is a biennial international prize that supports artistic creation. With a jury formed by Michael Mack (MACK Books), Alona Pardo (Barbican Art Gallery), Valentín Roma (La Virreina Centre de la Imatge), Elisabeth Sherman (ICP New York), and Carlos Gollonet (Fundación MAPFRE), the call aims to fund a new, unpublished body of work, whose artistic values will contribute to the tradition of documentary photography. The Award includes a cash prize of €25,000, national and international promotion, two exhibitions and an associated catalogue.

Charta Award 2023

Deadline 25 August / Entry fee €25

The photobook-dedicated festival Charta, taking place in Rome since 2021, is launching the second edition of their Charta Award. The open call welcomes artists whose practice includes the photographic medium, and who have produced a project that lends itself to an editorial purpose. With no restrictions in terms of theme, the Award seeks works with an original use of new contemporary languages and narratives. The winning body of work will become a book published by Yogurt Editions, with a print run of 500 copies.

Exposure 2024 International Open Call

Deadline 1 September / Entry fee €23

Exposure welcomes diverse and innovative submissions from photographers and visual artists around the world who incorporate, celebrate or challenge the photographic medium within their practice. Selected works will be shown in Calgary, Alberta at Contemporary Calgary as part of the 2024 Exposure Photography Festival, an international meeting place for photographers, curators, and experts to connect and celebrate emerging and established talent. 

The deadline for this call is on September 1st with the entry fee of 25 $ (23€ approx.). More information on their website

Aesthetica Art Prize

Deadline 8 September / Entry fee €30-35

The Aesthetica Art Prize celebrates contemporary art across all genres, media, and themes, with a particular focus on works that are able to reflect upon our ever-changing world. One winner will be awarded a monetary prize of £10,000 (€ 11600 approx.), while one Emerging Prize of £1,000 (€ 1160 approx.) will be granted to students and graduates from the last three years. Both will be included in a group exhibition in a major public gallery, and featured in the magazine and online Aesthetica platform.

Other Deadlines

Der Greif - Guest Room: Varun Gupta / Deadline 24 August / Entry fee 8€

This open call invites artists to explore the theme of "Metamorphosis" within the realm of alternative photography, welcoming submissions that include but are not limited to techniques such as cyanotype, salted paper, van dyke brown, gum arabic, gum oil, wet and dry plate collodion, silver gelatin processes, and other technology-based interventions. Awarded to work examining the digital representation of analog images, prizes include a 1.000€ Guest Room Scholarship and an online showcase on Der Greif.

Australian Photography Awards 2023 / Deadline 21 August / Entry fee 17€

The Australian Photography Award is looking for original, experimental and provoking photos taken by photographers residing within Australia, or Austrlian citizens living overseas. Alongside a prize pool of cash and camera equipment valued at over $40,000, the 2023 APA Event will provide the opportunity for selected photographers to have their work printed and exhibited at a major exhibition in Naarm/Melbourne.
