Photographer
Showkat Nanda is a journalist, documentary photographer and educator from Kashmir.
This project traces memory, loss, and survival in Kashmir through family photographs that were hidden, damaged, or destroyed during the 1990s, revealing how ordinary lives endure through absence and erasure.
The burden of enforced disappearances in Kashmir, which has been caught in a bloody conflict for nearly three decades, has been carried entirely by Kashmiri women – mothers and wives – whose loved ones were picked up only to vanish forever.
