Whisper

This work is a botanical landscape archive of trees, looking at the differences between trees in the city and in the wild, in the south and in the north, and in different countries.

Whisper is a collection of photographs featuring trees. I chose two places in the north and south of the country and one place abroad as my locations. In each place, I consciously searched for plants, observing the differences between plants in the city and in the wild, in the south and in the north, and in different countries. These landscapes are not only influenced by geography and climate, but also by urban planning interventions. Since 2022, I have been collecting ‘ID photos’ of these plants in an attempt to select and record an archive of botanical landscapes under my personal memory.

In terms of graphic design, the photos are arranged chronologically from early to late, with the outer cover in the form of a document box and the inner pages loose-leaf bound using metal clips. The inside text is made of Japanese washi paper, whose toughness and slightly rough touch echo the temperament of the trees, giving the reader a calm and simple reading experience. Combined with the semi-transparent effect of the paper, the images that come through are presented on the paper and interact with the images on the subsequent pages, adding visual layers. The Works Index page is a long page with an index of works on the front and information about the photographs taken throughout the book on the back. It is part of both the interior text and the inside cover. After reading, the information page is placed back on the cover by folding it over. Also the book comes with a rice paper postcard with images of trees responding to the path taken to take these photographs.
