this is not the beginning, this is not the end of the beginning, it’s perhaps the beginning of the end

storytelling - liminality - not the tiktok version - emotional liminal space - saying goodbye to a loved one - personal story - universal feeling - not about 1 place - pure and simple images - timeless - recognizable - b/w series - analog

November 2, 2023.

The first snow fell gently and Peter, my Canadian father-in-law, died peacefully of cancer.

Until then, it was unclear exactly when he would depart this life. I photographed my family and our surroundings during those last months full of melancholy.

We were in a liminal space : that moment during a personal journey between ‘what was’ and ‘what’s to come’, the ‘crossing over’ area, a place of transition, of waiting and not knowing.

I want to share that feeling with the viewers, because being in this kind of an emotional liminal space is universal. Everyone has experienced, or is afraid of entering, a transition phase when saying goodbye to a loved one.

That liminal space is filled with the deeper questions of life and wondering what will be next. It can be dark, but it can also bring hope and inspiration.
