consumed by uncertainty
I don‘t know you and I know you. Dad and Jörg don‘t talk much about you. When they do, the stories sound like tales of another family. A family before ours. I can sense how much suffering you brought them. But who were you? In war, captured, surrounded by death, even at home. Lion cubs for the children and standing in front of a beautiful car. In your final years everyone was afraid of you. Alcohol and anger and your sons? Lonely, a bit lost, and still a lot of work with you, Grandpa Höxter.
At 30 years old, I am starting to realize how little I know. I couldn`t see the connection between history and our family tales and wonder what else has not been seen. Encountering silence, shame, oblivion, repression and confrontation.
„consumed by uncertainty“ examines Antine Karla Yzer family's past during World War II. What significance does the family‘s collective memory have for the processing of Germany‘s war history, the practice and experience of violence, and the resulting coping mechanisms? What are the possibilities and limits of conveying memories within the family?
