Afternoons in a girls youth center in Neukölln - an open, protected space for girls and young women between the ages of 12 and 20. Between kitchen and sofa, craft table and dance room, closeness and solidarity are created. Conversations about school, crushes, racism, bodies and boundaries. A place where the girls can just be.
Despite all their differences, they share something fundamental: the need for self-determination, friendship, exchange, understanding, a space where nothing has to be hidden. A “second home” that creates freedom. They play together and cook, there are dancing activities, homework help and a garden where birthdays are celebrated or picnics are prepared.
Over a period of four months, I was able to accompany them on a weekly basis, get to know the space and immerse myself in various realities of life. My photographic work “Who`s that Girl?” attempts to capture the transitional period of “being a teenager” always in the same place.
