“We Will Return to You” is steeped in the pages of Jewish folklore. The lush landscape is both an exploration of storied histories and an expansion into new worlds, fixing its eye to narratives that reveal how Jewish stories are shared and built upon.
Surrounded by environmental, human, and divine obstacles, Jews have shaped their folklore in order to make sense of their surroundings and transfer their memory. The images in "We Will Return to You" mirror the ways that these stories are shared across generations by exploring lineage and storytelling through photographic narratives based in Jewish folkloric motif.
With the translation of Jewish narrative structure and iconography into images, the work considers the presence of tension, unease, and potency within Jewish mythos. The bright world within the images is fogged over by the hot breath of upheaval. Embodied as recurring tales, the performance of texts becomes a throughline that forms the photographic spine of Jewish storytelling. Between lands of dwelling, the stories carried onward become the heirlooms that shape Jewish visual culture.
Though a perennial world that considers how Jewish storytelling is shared, passed on, and remolded with each retelling, the photographs tend to lands that are sowed from a turbulent past and grow outwards towards the rumbling world to come.
