The Waiting Game

During lockdown, I returned to my first love: photojournalism photography. In that quiet period, I realized how much it meant to me. I began a project focused on demonstrating how Restaurant Lady Anne managed to survive without customers.

My journey with photojournalism began as a teen and deepened in college, where photographing family and neighbours, strengthened my passion for storytelling. These early experiences built the foundation for the essay, setting the stage for the narrative to come.

During lockdown, I returned to my first love: photography. In that quiet period, I realized how much it meant to me. I began a project focused on demonstrating how Restaurant Lady Anne managed to survive without customers. This transition marked the beginning of a journey that showcased resilience in the face of uncertainty.

Through this project, I met Keith and Carmel, a husband-and-wife team—Keith, an acclaimed, innovative chef, and Carmel, the head sommelier. Their efforts became central to my essay.

Keith showed me his vegetable and herb tunnel, where he carefully grows the ingredients for his menu. Unsure when he could serve, he remained hopeful. Working with them, revealed the full scope of their roles. One afternoon, I watched Carmel ironing linen and polishing glassware, while Keith sat writing menu ideas. Later, he tested flavors and colors. Even as the dining room stayed empty, his experimentation fuelled his passion for cooking.

Through capturing their response to lockdown, I documented moments of uncertainty, determination, and hope—each stage building a layered narrative. Their tireless pursuit of excellence kept both the restaurant and my story alive, connecting every scene back to the heart of the essay.

By summer, as restrictions eased, anticipation for reopening grew. After months of rent without customers, hope returned. This period made me wonder: was this the end of 'The Waiting Game'?

They were ready and excited to welcome customers. People reunited over Keith’s menus and Carmel’s drinks, though only in small groups. As the doors reopened, I realized the experience had changed us all. Capturing their story deepened my understanding of the impact of photojournalism on storytelling.

This experience taught me patience, strengthened my sense of community, and sparked my creativity. Most importantly, it reminded me to cherish each moment and live it to the fullest.
