The Sleepover considers the nature and protection of time and memory, specifically girlhood time, that fluid and transitory period that materializes and vanishes mysteriously post-adolescence.
My project consists of two types of photographs: 1) installation stills from a dual-projection video that I also created for this work and 2) photographs of common objects, flora, and fauna that hold personal meaning and worth. By manipulating time and space in the work, I construct new associations and remembrances.
I describe myself as a bricoleur, someone who collects and employs seemingly disparate objects in order to make meaning and beauty. In this work, I construct not what a sleepover looks like, but instead, how a sleepover feels under one girl’s skin. My own. I call them secrets so you'll listen.
"Sleepover Secrets" is the name of the book where these photographs first appeared.
