Reflecting through images on the poetic and mythical modes of experiencing - a human response in the face of the mystery of existence and elusiveness of the reality.
Subtle Objects series / currently a work in progress/ is inviting the viewer to give in to the magic that images exude by their own nature / by being a very specific means of ‘representation’ or rather ‘imagination’ of the reality /, as well as to reflect on the poetic and mythical modes of experiencing – a human response in the face of the mystery of existence and elusiveness of the reality.
The awe of how we are ‘creating’ reality through experiencing, what is informing and conditioning this process, our yearning for happiness, truth, love, beauty... and also how our subjective and singular from moment to moment arising realities ‘intersect’ in a shared experience forms the background on which this work is conceived.
Many influences, such as ‘primitive art’, surrealism, mythological thinking, transpersonal psychology, psychedelic research, silent meditation and non dual teachings are combined with author’s from childhood ongoing fascination with objects, experienced in a playful, curious and imaginative way.
The images are made in the studio, by staging the objects in interaction with human form against backdrops pointing into mysterious in/de/finite spaces behind and beyond.
The objects are allowed to assume roles of body parts, masks, ritual objects, alternate characters, imaginary entities, to become materializations of the psyche, while their own materiality becomes ambiguous.
Their sensuality and corporeality are juxtaposed with their symbolic function to open up a field of intuitive meaning and to evoke archetypal images.
This series is being created while questioning the presence, role and relevance of myths and imagination for us today, and with the hindsight on a very long and diverse history of our interaction with images, what we invest in them and the magic spell they cast on us in ever changing contexts since the prehistoric times up till now.
