Born from a desire to create the antithesis of a traditional family photo album, I pose my family with stockings on their heads to distort and distance the images from the conventional happy-family aesthetic.
The project draws attention to the ritual of gathering and posing for a picture-perfect representation of family life, which often conceals the nuances and complexities of these relationships. It also questions the presence of strangers within families—relatives you’ve rarely met but are connected by bloodline. The title, Strangely Familiar, plays on the notion that most families are inherently strange, and the stockings distort each face to look only “strangely familiar.”
