Storforsen

The hypnotic shapes of water at the Storforsen rapids, in Älvsbyn, Swedish Lapland.

In July 2023 my partner and I were nomads. An invitation took us to Vidsel, in Swedish Lapland, to look after a country house in a region we had always wanted to see.

I made this series over two afternoons at Storforsen. Most of the images are vertical, the format of portraiture, which sets the frame against what it holds: water that never settles into a body. A figure is always about to arrive and never holds.

Form and formlessness arrive in the same gesture: a shape holds long enough to be recognised and is already something else. I wanted to stay in the moment before a thing settles into a thing.
