Spinster is a personal project dealing with the complicated emotions of being a 30-year-old single woman.

The spark for this project began when I visited my home country Finland after being away for a year and a half; During my time away, many of my friends had gotten married, had had babies, and bought houses. This felt strange to me because I was single and working on my career rather than building a relationship.

Reflecting on the way media and folklore have shaped our way of thinking about relationships, my aim is to understand my own emotions more. There is a painful history of how unmarried women have been treated in the past; how they were burned as witches, made to pay more taxes, and were seen as inferior to married women. By putting myself into the position of these women I hope to shed light on new perspectives of the spinster.
