Sacricide (verb), the killing of a sacred object or person. This project is an act of rebellion against Catholicism, and how the church manufactured and weaponized the Bible and its characters (i.e., the Devil) to subject their followers to mass control.
Sacricide (verb), the killing of a sacred object or person. This is a word that I created specifically for this project, it is an act of rebellion and a radical exploration of healing collective trauma through the creation of art. The Catholic Church manufactured and, for millennia to this day, weaponizes the Bible and its characters (i.e., the Devil). Its a means to an end. It's a way to institutionalize mass control their followers. Yes, the pun is intended, if you are familiar with catholic rituals.
Don't get me wrong. Everyone has the right to religion, whichever they feel drawn to. But not everyone has the privilege of that choice, many are forced into it from birth without their consent, and many more are forced to remain a practitioner due to social pressures, threats of excommunication (meaning a loss of your support network and community), and even by reinforcing fears of eternal punishment for deciding to leave.
Catholicism (and other religions) have caused so much harm to people, and this photo project seeks to release us from those chains.
All images were shot on 120 and 4x5 B&W film, some of which are in infrared.
