屋：ROOFS

Through my lens, I explore the textures and layered compositions of rooftops shaped by culture and time. Each holds its own rhythm and identity, revealing harmony within complexity.

I have long been fascinated by roofs, though I do not yet fully know where this fascination comes from. Perhaps it is because I love looking at the sky, the silhouettes buildings carve into it, the way roofs cut into vastness. While walls define boundaries, roofs reach outward and upward. They hold structure and imagination at once.

Across the years, whether on digital or film, I find myself returning to the same photographs. No matter how often I encounter them, they bring me comfort. Where others might see chaos, I see meticulous composition — harmony within complexity. Through my lens, I trace the layers that compose them: repeating tiles, carved edges, painted beams, shadows falling across curved lines. Roofs are universal, yet each carries a singular story, shaped by culture, history, craftsmanship, and time. Each bears the imprint of a specific hand and moment. These structures demand precision, yet express fluidity. Their curves soften rigidity; their repetition creates symmetry. They embody a tension between order and chaos.

In Chinese, Japanese and historical Korean writing, the character 屋 evokes the idea of dwelling, shelter, and structure. This shared symbol carries the notion of a space that protects and holds life beneath it. More than a literal roofline, it suggests enclosure, care, and the relationship between architecture and human life.

In these overlapping lines and rising forms, there is more than construction. There is memory embedded in material, culture translated into structure, imagination disciplined by craft. Against the vastness of the sky, these compositions feel both grounded and aspirational.

Photographed across Taiwan, China, South Korea, and Japan, this series explores that delicate equilibrium, the quiet harmony that emerges when complexity is carefully constructed, when architecture becomes a dialogue between human intention and the world it inhabits.
