RITUALS OF REFLECTION

“Rituals of Reflection” explores bathing as a universal practice, uniting us across cultures. Candid moments of solitude, intimacy & community are captured; customs celebrated through the ritualistic act of immersion, highlighting our shared humanity.

In a world often divided by borders and beliefs, the act of bathing emerges as a universal ritual—an intimate practice that transcends cultural barriers and fosters international connection. Rituals of Reflection explores the diverse manner in which bathing serves as a shared human experience, revealing our inherent desire for purification, solace, and community.

Through the lens of film photography, I have sought to capture the profound beauty and nuance of bathing rituals across Europe and Australia. Each image invites the viewer to witness moments of unification and serenity, water honoured within both natural settings and through architectural interventions in public space. Film was utilised as a primary photographic medium, the grain contributing an element of tactility to each photograph, evoking a sense of nostalgia and warmth, grounding these experiences in a shared, timeless human narrative .

The language of bathing extends beyond physical cleansing; it communicates a space for reflection, intimacy, and renewal to occur. It serves as a grounding moment of tranquility in our busy lives, allowing us to reconnect with ourselves and together. As I traveled to capture these moments, I encountered stories of love, loss, and rebirth beneath the surface, visibly unfolding through the gentle embrace of water. From the geothermal hot springs of Iceland to the historic bathhouses of Budapest, each setting offers a glimpse into how we navigate our humanity through this age-old practice whilst revealing the customs of a local community and their culture.

Rituals of Reflection aims to celebrate the rich tapestry of cultural bathing practices while highlighting our shared experiences; inviting the audience to contemplate their own rituals and the common threads that bind us. In this exploration, I hope to foster a deeper understanding of the manner in which we connect, heal, play and find enjoyment through the simple act of bathing.

As this project evolves across continents, I aspire not only to document these moments but also to inspire a dialogue regarding the significance water fosters towards communal wellbeing in public space—its power to cleanse, heal and unite.
