Obsidian investigates the instability of images and the fragile boundaries of form. Through a dialogue between photographic printmaking and monotype, each work becomes a space of metamorphosis, suspended between painting and photography.
Obsidian is a visual and poetic exploration of spaces of uncertainty, suspended between control and surrender. Through a process of image transformation, the project examines how a form can emerge, dissolve, and be reborn. Centered on vulnerability, the fragility of existence, and processes of transformation, the series reinterprets classical genres from the history of painting, including portraiture, landscape, and still life.
The photographs are first translated into photogravure and printed on an etching press. In a second stage, layers of color are applied through monotype, also using the press. Under pressure, the paint disperses, stretches, and shifts across the surface, creating unpredictable traces that transform the photographic image. Chance enters into dialogue with intention, and the image gradually takes shape through successive layers, balancing deliberate gestures with unforeseen events. This continuous interplay between decision and accident reveals new visual relationships between the image and painting.
The final image emerges from a constant tension between the desire to construct an image and the acceptance of what escapes control. The passage through the press becomes a space of metamorphosis where photographic printmaking and monotype intersect, influence one another, and open a broader reflection on the very notion of form, its stability, its disappearance, and its capacity for reinvention.
