Mavki. Camouflage

Ukrainian women have transcended traditional roles to forge a new narrative. The military conflict has transformed gender dynamics, granting women increased mobility, independence, and leadership opportunities.

Mavki. Camouflage

The project highlights the resilience and strength of the women from Gorenka, a village in Ukraine's Buchansky District, who became heroines during the harrowing events of March 2022. When Gorenka found itself on the front line amidst constant shelling, 77% of the village's buildings were destroyed, causing immense trauma as residents witnessed the devastation of their homes and the loss of neighbors.

In the aftermath of the liberation of Kyiv Oblast, the women united to form the volunteer group “Gorenski Mavky,” driven by a shared commitment to help their community recover, despite the ongoing war. They come from diverse backgrounds but are unified in their mission. During the harsh winter of 2022-2023, they continued to weave camouflage products by candlelight, even under the constant threat of rocket attacks. Their efforts include creating nets that blend with natural surroundings and “kikimori” camouflage clothing that protects military personnel.

This project draws upon Ukrainian mythology, specifically the Mavka—a folkloric figure symbolizing femininity and self-sacrificing love. Each photograph reveals the virtues of these women: their beauty, connection to nature, and commitment to family and community. Rather than seeking revenge for their losses, they focus on protecting the present and building a future for the next generation.

Through the lens of camouflage, the project illustrates their vulnerability and strength as guardians, embodying the enduring spirit of resilience amidst adversity.

Camouflage as an abstract pattern evokes a range of interpretations—from concealment to bravery, beauty in idyllic landscapes to the tension felt by snipers. This duality positions the project’s heroines as both vulnerable and powerful protectors, embodying strength derived from nature itself.

Historically, Ukrainian women have come together to weave, sing, and pray, and the vyshyvanka (embroidered shirt) has long symbolized unity and tradition. Today, these camouflage items serve as a modern interpretation of that cultural heritage, marking a contemporary gathering of women working toward a common goal.

The act of weaving camouflage has spread throughout every village, city, community, school, museum, and subway across Ukraine, becoming a defining characteristic of our times. The imagery associated with this project therefore serves as a marker, highlighting a collective experience shaped by ongoing conflict.

For over 2.5 years, women have continued to make camouflage items that imitate natural colors, and "kikimoras" - camouflage clothing for snipers and scouts that makes soldiers invisible and saves lives. There is a constant need for such items, they are sent to the front as quickly as possible. Volunteers are convinced that camouflage items woven with love and faith have the power of a talisman.
