"HUMAN BEING" - A visual journey exploring the profound connection between Lao agriculture and the essence of humanity

I am Pimmasone Siphanthong (Pim), a passionate photographer hailing from one of the world's least developed countries, where artistic horizons are yet to fully unfold. My project, "HUMAN BEING," is not just a collection of photographs; it's a journey through the lens, an exploration of the profound connection between Lao agriculture and the very essence of humanity.

For all of my 24 years, my life has been entwined with the vibrant market where my mother worked diligently. In the midst of this bustling world, I've witnessed the integral role of nature and agriculture, not only in my life but also in the lives of countless Laotians. In a nation where over 80 percent of people rely on agriculture for their livelihood, I see more in vegetables and the land that nurtures them. To me, they represent not just sustenance but essential body parts of us, humans—the very reason for our being.

But here's the heart of the matter: despite its importance, agriculture in Laos remains underinvested. The potential, the artistry, and the sheer brilliance of our agricultural products deserve international recognition. So, with my camera, I've endeavored to raise awareness and inspire change. I want the world to see that Lao agriculture can be more than just goods at a market; it can be a masterpiece on the world stage.

Yet, there's another profound parallel here. Women in Laos are like agriculture, an untapped force of immense potential. We are the mothers, wives, and daughters—pivotal to our nation's journey. However, there's a dearth of investment in our capabilities, particularly in the realms of art and photography. Just as I yearn to see Lao agriculture shine internationally, I also dream of Lao women making their mark on a global stage.

This project is about more than just my win; it's about paving the way for the girls and women of the Lao PDR, showing them that they, too, can achieve their dreams and break barriers. Join me on this transformative journey that transcends boundaries and challenges stereotypes. Together, we can create change, inspire, and empower a future where Lao women take their rightful place in the world of art and photography and beyond.
