Guerreiras Provisional Systems Under Pressure

Some forms of labor resist modernization.

Labor that resets every day. Weight that still needs to move. Systems that persist without guarantees.

The machines follow.

Bent under excess, they keep going — turning corners, climbing hills, carrying what exceeds their design. Sometimes they give in.

Inside, another scale of time.

A steering wheel from another decade. A plastic dancer that never stops moving. A ceiling handle — colloquially called “puta merda” — named after the words spoken when the curve tightens and balance is at risk.

I photographed these vehicles from inside a moving car — at traffic lights, in passing, in the brief intervals the city produces but does not register.

And in the end, a simple measure remains:

what can still be sustained.
