Grammar of Garlands is an ongoing street photography project tracing how flower garlands—moving between devotion, labor, and commerce—shape everyday thresholds in Tamil Nadu, India. Across markets, temple entrances, school gates, and roadside stalls, flowers function as both sacred offerings and everyday commodities. This work follows these quiet circulations to observe how public space is held together by micro-rituals.

I enter these streets as a transient—someone whose understanding often lags behind what the eyes register. Rather than building a narrative around specific events, I focus on transitional zones: doorways, moments of waiting, and the small negotiations that occur before arrival. The project began as a way to stay present, recognizing how "everyday life" is sustained through repeated, quiet gestures.

The images employ a documentary street vocabulary while maintaining a thin layer of diffusion—haze, softened edges, and occasional blur—evoking the feeling of looking through weather, glass, or memory. I let the city’s muted greys and dusty tones form the backdrop, allowing the vibrant reds, yellows, and whites of the garlands to act as persistent signals. The goal is not spectacle, but a tactile sense of presence.

My process is rooted in pure street photography: I do not intervene, direct, or ask for reenactments. I work only as the light allows, letting people and places maintain their own tempo. As a temporary observer, I respect distance, coincidence, and the aspects of daily life that remain beyond my decoding.

The project is currently ongoing. Having documented Tamil Nadu (South India), the inquiry will soon expand to North India, exploring how these same themes manifest within different urban rhythms and thresholds.

The final project will culminate in a photo book and an exhibition installation, designed to translate the rhythm of walking, waiting, and crossing into a spatial experience for the viewer.
