FIND UR WAY. BACK

Quite plainly, despite the different topics each project conveys, altogether, my work is a collection of Muses amongst the Pan-African diaspora, who yearn to celebrate every fiber of their being with the utmost authenticity. Ultimately, finding their way back to themselves and their larger community. The inimitable essence of the diaspora is ingrained into my work.

In this compilation, each project bears the following questions: “What does reclamation look like?” “How can stories of reclamation be visually communicated?” “How does this medium resonate and fortify identities in the Pan-African diaspora?” “How can this concept engage with the community?” “Who has access to engage with this story?”.

From the following projects:

“AN ODE TO A DAMNed Man” is an exploration of Black man masculinity and expression. The five-part visual series was inspired by five songs from Kendrick Lamar’s Pulitzer Prize Award album, “DAMN”. For my first solo art show, I was able to raise enough money for a one-night-only gallery, where guests were able to not only view the work but also interact with the art by sharing how they define masculinity on a bulletin board. Followed by a live performance and a screening of the interviews featuring men in the series.

"ZEPHYR” is the first act of the “Children of Venys'' photo series, a celebration and reclamation of the Black human form, inspired by the life and death of Saartjie Baartman (infamously referred to as “Venus Hottentot”). Act I celebrates the poise and strength of the body through dance. The Children move with wind as a vessel. In Zephyr, the children allow the ancestral spirit of Venys to inhabit them.

“YEEHAW SPICE AIN’T SO NICE” is a visual series that paid homage to the glamour and grace of Black cowgirls/wranglers following the critically acclaimed, “When I Get Home” visual album by Solange Knowles.

“SOUL DRESSING” is an editorial display of the soul undressing (detaching) from the expectations of the physical, the soul is able to reclaim its sense of expression and surrender to their becoming by stripping themselves down to their most vulnerable state. In turn, dressing in their most immaculate and triumphant state.

“CRASH LANDING” is the second act of the "Odyssey" four-act short film and photo series. Act II follows Maria and Xenia. Sisters who are estranged after the crash landing. Maria is the brains and numbers behind the operation. Xenia is the Captain of the space fleet. Both sisters have to lean on instinct and the divine to find their way back to each other to continue the greater quest afoot. “ODYSSEY” is a tale centered around a homecoming of sorts: returning home to one’s self in a quest to self-discovery and coming home to one’s tribe.
