Debutantes

My photography project has taken the classical debutante as a concept I could develop with a contemporary edge illustrating the ways in which any woman can draw on her feminine allure to make a good new beginning in everyday life.

Today’s celebrity culture glamorises a very few women on the global stage. In earlier times, however, a considerable number of young women (from privileged backgrounds) had the chance to become briefly celebrities in their own social

milieu as debutantes. Here the beginning of adult life and marriageable eligibility was being celebrated as the young woman left behind girlhood. She would be thrown into a “season” of carefully constructed social events with an equally carefully

constructed image that marked her transition.
