Daughters of the Earth — En Route An authorial photography project, a visual story exploring women, cultural heritage, identity and belonging in Scotland.

Daughters of the Earth – En Route

Daughters of the Earth – En Route is an authorial photographic project bringing together eight women of different cultural backgrounds in the Scottish landscape. Their roots extend across Central Asia and Eastern Europe, including Kazakh, Tatar, Sakha (Yakut), Polish, Lithuanian and Russian heritage. Through their presence in Scotland, these women become part of a contemporary cultural landscape shaped by migration, cultural exchange and the meeting of different histories. Their stories reflect the diversity of modern Scotland and the ways in which communities with roots far beyond Britain contribute to its evolving cultural identity.

Through staged encounters, traditional dress, gestures and shared rituals, the project explores how women with different cultural roots and life experiences can inhabit the same land while retaining their distinct identities.

Set against the ancient landscape surrounding Dunnottar Castle and Stonehaven, the series unfolds as a visual narrative of a journey — from the anticipation of an unfamiliar future to encounters, pauses, reflection and mutual blessing. Each woman follows a path shaped by her own experiences, hopes and memories. Although they share the same ground, their journeys do not necessarily follow the same course.

The Scottish landscape is an active presence in this narrative: more than a backdrop, it becomes a meeting point between individual histories and a place shaped by generations before them. Through the symbolism of harvest, prayer and blessing, the project explores belonging not as the loss of difference, but as the possibility of finding connection while remaining oneself.

This series marks the beginning of an ongoing photographic exploration of cultural identity, belonging and the ways different communities relate to the land they inhabit. Future chapters may bring together women from other cultural backgrounds, exploring new traditions, identities and cultural narratives within Scotland’s diverse landscape. Together, these evolving narratives will form a broader reflection on the many ways women carry their heritage while making a place for themselves in a shared world.

First Greetings. Every journey begins with a greeting. On new ground, we instinctively seek a sense of kinship in one another.

Looking Ahead. Upon arrival on new ground, it is important to seek out places that embody its spirit — places where we can begin to connect with the land and imagine the life that lies ahead. Here, against the ancient ruins of Dunnottar Castle, each woman looks towards a future and a past of her own, on a land shaped by generations before her.

Different Visions As women look towards the future, each sees something different. For some, the future is uncertainty; for others, anticipation. Some look ahead with hope, while others carefully observe what lies before them. They stand on the same ground, yet each imagines a different future. (Dunnottar Castle, Aberdeenshire, Scotland)

Looking Around. Once a connection with a new place begins to take shape, attention turns to the people nearby. Who are they? What stories do they carry? And what does it mean to share this land, and the life unfolding on it, with one another?

Seeking Connection. For a Woman, finding connection in a new place can begin with..another Woman. A look, a moment of curiosity, and the possibility of building trust and feeling safe with one another while discovering the stories of lives that have taken different paths.

Finding a Shared Rhythm. Connection grows as a resonance with one another begins to emerge through the discovery of culture, art and the traditions each woman carries. Their ways of expressing themselves may be different, yet they can find a common rhythm.

Beyond the Beginning. The journey begins with hope, fuelled by the promise of new possibilities. Yet the road ahead may bring challenges that are difficult to imagine at the outset. Some will reach the end, while others will turn back halfway or choose not to continue. As paths diverge and some journeys come to an end, others may step in to take their place. The journey moves on, but not everyone

Not a Tourist Anymore. Life as an immigrant pulls a Woman out of the role of a visitor. She has left behind the place where she belonged, and at first, she feels acutely like an outlander — so different, so outcast.

Together, Yet Apart. The same road can be shared, yet each Woman walks at a different pace and follows her way, shaped by her own experiences, fear, struggles and hopes.

A Moment of Pause. Along the way, a moment of pause is needed — for a Woman to catch her breath and take stock of where she stands before moving forward.

The Fruits of Her Journey. As a Woman moves along life’s path, the fruits of her journey gradually begin to appear — what she has gathered, what she has grown, and what she carries forward into the life she is building…

…It is also a moment for a Woman to acknowledge what she has achieved, to recognise how far she has come, and to honour what has taken root along the way.

A Prayer for All Women. In gratitude for all that has been lived, all that is present, and all that lies ahead, Women come together in prayer for one another — honouring the paths they have walked, the challenges they face, and the hopes they carry into the future.

A Circle of Life. At this point in the photographic journey, the path comes to rest at a war memorial — a place where life and death stand side by side. The memorial bears witness to death, destruction and loss, while Women, as living bearers of life and future generations, stand around it. One exists in the shadow of the other, reminding us that life and death are inseparable.

The Arch of Blessings. Every ending makes space for a new beginning. And every new journey deserves a blessing — a gesture of hope, strength and faith in the life that lies ahead.

Even when the path becomes difficult, a Woman needs the blessing and support of other Women — the strength to endure hardship and the courage to keep moving forward. And in moments of happiness, to be seen, recognised and celebrated by other Women is just as meaningful — a reminder that joy, too, deserves to be shared.

…Being seen, accepted and celebrated by other Women creates a sense of belonging and gives a Woman the strength to move forward towards new endeavours.
