Coils is an experimental take on contemporary African identity braiding popular iconography to different hairstyles.

Begging the question of what it means to be a African n, these series of images were created from an introspection. carrying many influences from the outside the African continent the series was created in Nairobi, Kenya.

Braiding popular iconography into hair the series seeks to capture some of the many influences that are found at home. Looking at behaviour r, language and dressing the works seeks to put forth what i would term as "winds" carried from distant lands, this religion, dressing, language substituted with objects that can be termed as metaphorical representations that are sourced from the local market.

Africa cultures, before the colonial sphere contained a various hairstyles and at its core related to the community, either depicting status, stage of life and place in the community. It also played a very important role as hair was done communally and the practise is still carried on to this day.
