Broken Project

Broken is a limited-edition series blending photography and digital art to explore migration and identity. Inspired by Romanian heritage and New York life, I use color and geometry to reimagine the city’s architecture while bridging past and present.

"Broken" is a limited-edition series of photographs and digital art exploring how migration enriches identity. The project combines photography with digitally created geometric forms, using color as both material and metaphor for transformation. As a Romanian-born artist in New York City, I draw on my experience adapting to new environments to reflect the fluid nature of identity. Each piece reimagines the city’s architecture through color, shape, and digital manipulation, blending heritage with urban energy to explore themes of transition, belonging, and dwelling.

"Broken" is a visual dialogue between permanence and change, stability and flux. I transform photographs of New York—both iconic and overlooked—through digital abstraction. Color is my primary material, bridging the city's dynamic lines. Influenced by Bauhaus and Constructivism, I reinterpret buildings as geometric forms, questioning how migration shapes identity. My pieces are available in limited editions of 10, printed on archival pigment paper and mounted on aluminum dibond.

My process begins with photographing New York City’s textures, shadows, and skyline, then digitally recomposing them in Photoshop. Geometry provides both structure and metaphor, while abstraction reveals layered narratives of history and culture. In this project, I experiment with layers, blurring, and manipulation of forms. Romanian embroidery and the city’s colors—red, yellow, and blue —inspired my color choices, emphasizing the tension between order and spontaneity. The combination of photography and digital art preserves a sense of place and memory. Influenced by artists such as Kandinsky and László Moholy-Nagy, I seek to expand artistic boundaries by exploring the relationship between form, color, and digital innovation. In works such as “Architecture World Trade Center NYC,” landmarks become intersecting shapes and colors.

My journey from engineering in Romania to marketing in New York offers a structured yet creative perspective. This project is deeply personal and serves as an homage to my father, who taught me to recognize the connection between architecture, community, and emotion. His words, "Listen to the rhythm of this bridge," continue to inspire my work.

The project "Broken" addresses impermanence, resilience, and the negotiation of artistic identity. I integrated Romanian and New York symbols and motifs, inviting viewers to engage in a dialogue about migration, adaptation, and the transformative power of art. Hoping the viewers will pause to reflect on the juxtaposition of familiar and unfamiliar elements and recognize echoes of their own experiences within the fragments, I intend to initiate the narrative of their own stories about the ongoing evolution of place and self through color as both material and symbol.
