A Rite of Passage

This series of photographs documents pregnancy and early motherhood as a period of profound physical, emotional and perceptual transformation. Moving between the intimate landscape of the body and the wider landscapes of water, earth and light, the work considers motherhood as a process of becoming: of dissolution and re-forming, of surrendering one sense of self while another emerges. The photographs hold space for the tenderness, uncertainty and wonder of this threshold, a portal through which the boundaries between body, child, memory and landscape become porous - become one.

To intone the lowlands of a prayer

a secondary heartbeat

willed from the waterfall

A quickening of zinc

A sparkfall

expanding in the heat of darkness

The journey of the body begins

the pilgrimage of life

as old as the beginning
