meremetisi

Meremetisi is an artist book based on Alfred Schupler’s war correspondence and on traces of conflict revisited 20 years later, exploring war as document, memory, ruin, and unresolved visual aftermath.

Meremetisi is an artist book that brings together Alfred Schupler’s photographic war correspondence with a return to the same sites twenty years after the conflict. The project began from the need to document war, but gradually shifted toward a broader investigation of its military, cultural, moral, and aesthetic implications.

Rather than treating photography as neutral evidence alone, the work explores the tension between document and interpretation, between the immediate reality of violence and its delayed memorial traces. The book moves from the real horrors of war toward the ways in which photography preserves, transforms, and reactivates them in the present.

In this sense, Meremetisi is not only about war itself, but about the persistence of conflict in landscape, image, and memory. The artist book was published in Bucharest in 2020, with graphic design by Alfred Schupler, in a limited edition of 15 signed and numbered copies. Fourteen copies were donated to photography museums and libraries. This volume is not for sale.
