Join The New PhMuseum 2024/25 Online Masterclasses Program

Develop your photography projects and curatorial skills working with Erik Kessels, Laura El-Tantawy, Elisa Medde, Lewis Chaplin (Loose Joints) and Salvatore Vitale.

We are happy to announce the new edition of Online Masterclasses from the PhMuseum Education Program. Each course is tailored to meet the needs of contemporary photographers, artists, curators, and storytellers looking to cater to specific areas of the visual language, from research and critical thinking to photobook making and exhibition design.

The 4 masterclasses are sharing a single intake period running through 20 June, with classes beginning in October 2024 under the guidance of acclaimed professionals in a supportive online environment. In these coming weeks, you can learn more and apply for one or more of the following programs:

1. CRITICAE - Online Masterclass On Documentary Photography

The masterclass joins the experience of the past years into a unique program that explores the relationship between personal and critical methods. Led by internationally renowned professionals Laura El-Tantawy, documentary photographer, and Elisa Medde, editor and curator, participants will delve into different modes of storytelling, questioning the documentary aspect of photography and its various media. Alternating collective and individual meetings, participants will define their relationship with the medium and develop critical documentary strategies. Plus, at the end of the masterclass, one or more participants will be selected for an exhibition at PhMuseum Lab in Bologna, Italy.

2. CURAE - Online Masterclass On Curatorial Practice

In contemporary photography, the process of curation of an exhibition is wide open and there are still many new ways to be discovered. Over a period of 8 months, artist and curator Erik Kessels will explore this journey, untangling the hurdles to take and discovering the exciting opportunities. Mixing theoretical seminars with practical sessions, Kessels will teach, inspire, and practice with the participants how to curate the best possible exhibition with their own or someone else’s work.

3. FOLIO - Online Masterclass On Photobook Making

Now at its 5th edition, Folio 2024/25 is led by Lewis Chaplin, co-founder of the multi-award-winning, independent publishing house and design studio Loose Joints. A selected group of photographers will be followed through the advanced phase of their projects with the goal of concluding a body of work and having it ready for publishing. The program will be conducted online, with a final gathering at the PhMuseum Days International Photography Festival (Bologna, Italy) where PhMuseum will curate an exhibition showcasing all the dummies produced.

4. MEDIAE - Online Masterclass on Transmedia Storytelling

The masterclass with Salvatore Vitale is designed explicitly for practitioners seeking to explore the expressive potential of photography through interaction with diverse media. Participants will have the opportunity to create a narrative project while experimenting with different research, production and dissemination strategies. They will be challenged to select a theme, conduct research, and develop work both from a theoretical and practical perspective. The ultimate goal is to conclude a transmedia project that incorporates photography in conjunction with various other media, such as sound, archive images, social platforms, video, and text, to create a more immersive and engaging experience for their audience.

Each Masterclass offers Group Sessions and Seminars that provide theoretical and practical guidance on contemporary photography, allowing you to enjoy ideas and feedback both from the professors and from other coursemates. The One-To-One Mentoring sessions instead are conceived to offer you a moment of privacy with the head professor who will answer the specific needs of your practice. The Online Studio Visits allow participants from across the masterclasses to discover the practice of external guests. Another opportunity to connect with peers from other classes and ask questions to experts in the field. Previous guests included Lars Willumeit, Mathieu Asselin, Bindi Vora, Jon Uriarte, Silvia Rosi, Sayuri Ichida, Anne van der Zwaag, Sybren Kuiper, Amak Mahmoodian, Claudia Kussel, Barbara Hofmann-Johnson, Melissa Catanese, Lea Vene and Federico Clavarino.

Plus, at the end of the program, a selection of participants will have their work featured in PhMuseum’s new annual printed publication.
