In its 18th edition, PhotoNOLA draws hundreds of photography professionals to New Orleans to partake in a variety of programs, such as exhibitions, workshops, lectures, portfolio reviews, and more.

Overview

PhotoNOLA is an annual celebration of photography produced by the New Orleans Photo Alliance in partnership with museums, galleries, and alternative venues citywide that reaches broadly into the local community with exhibitions and events that are largely free and open to the public. Although many exhibitions will be open during the whole month of December, a condensed programme will take place from 13/12 to 17/12.

An important section of the festival is the program of Portfolio Reviews, which provide photographers with networking opportunities, critical advice, and guidance for bringing their work to a larger audience. The PhotoWALK offers participating photographers a chance to share their portfolios with the general public, additional reviewers and each other. At the end of the weekend, reviewers rank their favourite portfolios and one photographer is awarded the PhotoNOLA Review Prize.

Another highlight of the festival is Still/Motion: The Festival of Photography in Film,  which celebrates photography’s intersection with cinema. This year’s program includes films featuring photographic works of Sebastião Salgado, Robert Capa, Gerda Taro, David “Chim” Seymour, Joel-Peter Witkin and Ben Depp.

Broad ranging photography exhibitions are on view throughout the month of December, spotlighting diverse applications of the medium. Moreover, open-air exhibitions are highlighted around the city in collaboration with local businesses. Artist talks, workshops and a photobook fair round off the programme of 2023.
