Photo Marseille 2023

From October to December, photojournalism will take over the city of Marseille with a rich programme of events in the thirteenth edition of the festival.

Overview

Dedicated to contemporary photography, Photo Marseille showcases in 2023 the work of more than 100 photographers throughout 22 venues in the French city. Individual and collective exhibitions, including the one showcasing the results of the Prix Maison Blanche, as well as projections, talks, and masterclasses are part of the program.

Highlighting photojournalism, this edition presents an outdoor collective exhibition dedicated to the theme of migrations, bringing together ten different projects. Multidisciplinary artist Anita Pouchard Serra presents a report exploring the complexity of transnational identities, starting from her own multicultural family history between France and Algeria. In the same area, Hans Zeeldieb photographs the return to normality after Covid restrictions in the maritime links between the two countries. The pandemic is also a backdrop for Aimée Thirion, who portrays the numerous journeys of women exiled on French territory after Covid.

Since its creation in 2011, the festival has focused on discovering young talents and highlighting recognized photographers from the international contemporary scene. The event creates a link between the history of photography and its current practices through exhibitions and educational activities for the public such as guided tours, workshops, and conferences.
