OFF Bratislava 2026

The 17th edition of the international festival of contemporary photography, titled White Noise, explores the tension between density and legibility amid today’s media culture.

Overview

The festival OFF Bratislava acquires its uniqueness by being a platform for new talents from the photography scene. Since its inception, the aim of the event has been to create optimum conditions for the promotion and support of emerging artists working in the field of photography and new media. The festival started in 2010 and during its 16-year history it has explored various social topics. It has thus stimulated contemplation, for example, on the ideology of dogma, the mystery of birth, the revolutionary manifesto, the archive of the future, the generation Y, the force of migration, or the human impact on our planet’s ecosystem.

The 17th edition of the international festival of contemporary photography, titled White Noise, explores the tension between density and legibility amid today’s media culture. In acoustics, white noise refers to all frequencies occurring at once — a sound without centre or hierarchy. The term derives from optics, where white light contains the full colour spectrum. As a metaphor, it captures a state of informational saturation, in which signals merge into a continuous background, rendering chaos the standard mode of operation.

Each moment brings new impulses, micro-decisions, and stimuli unfolding below the threshold of awareness. Excess no longer means richness, it turns into a burden – mental and sensory. The festival reflects an era of overproduction: a high concentration of images, objects, data, and inputs that strain perception. The weight of abundance appears as fatigue, distraction, and loss of orientation. At the same time, it initiates new ways of reading – searching for patterns in the midst of apparent randomness, selective filtering, conscious slowing down.

On an artistic level, White Noise manifests through layering, fragmentation, and the interweaving of media. Glitch, digital distortion, hidden patterns, and coincidence are part of the language. Many works create immersive environments that draw viewers into the whirl of overload. This is not an aestheticization of chaos, but its physical and perceptual reality, expressed through the multiplicity of images, sounds, textures, and materials.

Yet alongside this intensity, the festival also forms opposing poles. Within the density, quieter zones emerge – islands intended for contemplation. Reduction becomes an active gesture, a way of regaining the ability to formulate rather than merely react. The contrast between noise and clarity defines this year’s theme. The friction arising from the interplay of interference and articulation shapes the festival’s cognitive scope. White Noise does not limit itself to criticizing information culture, it examines its mechanisms and transforms them into a spatial experience. At its core lies a blank space where one does not remain a passive receiver, but takes responsibility for what is allowed to resonate.
