This year welcomes the 12th annual Medium Festival and Medium Review, bringing photographers, curators, and the community together in San Diego and Tijuana to celebrate photography.
Overview
Artist talks, film screenings, workshops, publishing panels, and exhibitions at locations across San Diego and Tijuana are part of a new rich program organised by Medium photo.
Among the main events is the signature exhibition Size Matters hosted during the annual Medium Festival of Photography. The show celebrates photo based artwork smaller than 10”. Previous exhibitions have included 35mm contact prints to multi-media digital work, sculptural works, camera-less images, and exquisite 8”x10” contact prints. No matter what kind of camera are used (or if no camera is used) Size Matters is the premier photography exhibition celebrating small works. Artworks are selected through an open call, with Crista Dix (Executive Director of the Griffin Museum in Winchester, MA) as the 2024 exhibition juror. Fourthy works will be exhibited with one artist selected to receive the Size Matters purchase prize. The exhibition is hosted by the Athenaeum Art Center and will be on view from April 2 through April 30, 2024.
In addition, each year Medium Photo invites influential and talented professionals from across the field of photography to meet one-on-one with artists during. Ideas are exchanged, professional connections are built during Medium Review held at the Marriott Courtyard Hotel in Old Town San Diego. The event takes place over two days, April 25-26, 2024, with a welcome evening on April 24, offering an opportunity for creative artists to meet with museum curators, gallery owners, and editors from across the spectrum of fine art photography. Jennifer Findley, Frances Jakubek, Andy Burgess, Michel Kirchoff, Jane Yeomans, Grace Widyatmadja, Isabel Casso, Crista Dix, Charlie Wylie, Diane Chung Anne Kelly and Alex Decosta are among the gallery directors, curators, publishers, editors from across the United States available to begin relationships with participating photographers. Each year reviewers nominate three artists they met with, whose work and ability to speak about their work resonate. One artist is chosen through reviewer nominations to receive the Second Sight Award, which was given to Anh-Thuy Nguyen in 2023.
