Cortona On The Move 2023

The photography festival Cortona On The Move has been held since 2011 in the Tuscan town of Cortona. A protagonist of photographic production at the international level, the festival is an international point of reference.

Overview

Now approaching its 13th edition, under the direction of Veronica Nicolardi and the artistic direction of Paolo Woods, the festival makes documentary narrative the center of its interest and focuses on themes that are contemporary and socially relevant. At a time in history when photography provides the most universal means of narrating the world in which we live, the festival aims to make it accessible and understandable to the general public and makes it a driver of cultural exchange and growth. Each year, Cortona On The Move carries out research on the evolution of photographic language and increasingly privileges the production and realization of original and unpublished content. From mid-July till the end of September, events and photographic exhibitions will enliven the medieval town of Cortona, enhancing its artistic heritage, including the Fortress of the Girifalco, a fortified structure of Medici origins that overlooks Cortona, as well as its historic palaces and evocative open spaces. Cortona On The Move is the brainchild and product of the ON THE MOVE Cultural Association, whose goal is to disseminate and promote contemporary photography.

The top priority on the list of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals is to “eradicate poverty.” This did not happen. According to most metrics, the rich have gotten richer and the poor poorer. An average American would need to work for three million years to become as rich as the richest American, some of whom are richer than entire countries.

The theme of the thirteenth festival edition is More or Less. It defines the world we live in, our aspirations, our fears, our affiliations. Abundance versus scarcity, the unnecessary versus the essential, the happy few versus the masses, accumulating versus shedding.

More or Less are themes very dear to photography, with entire genres having developed around the two. At Cortona On The Move 2023 we will explore More, looking at the past and present, and we will dwell Less on the stereotypes, delivering a program rich in ideas for understanding our world and poor in simplifications.
