Whispers of the Sunlit Coast by Kim Lang transforms Jardin Bellevue in Clervaux into a space where photography, nature, and public space meet, revealing the overlooked communities behind Rio de Janeiro’s iconic beach culture.
Overview
Presented as part of the Cité de l’Image project, Kim Lang’s Whispers of the Sunlit Coast brings photography into dialogue with the landscape of Jardin Bellevue in Clervaux. Installed in the “Konschtpark,” the exhibition transforms the former mini-golf site into an open-air space where art and nature invite visitors to experience a familiar place from a new perspective.
The series explores the relationship between global tourism, local identity, and the communities that sustain the image of Rio de Janeiro’s famous coastline. Looking beyond the postcard-like representations of beaches such as Copacabana and Ipanema, Lang focuses on the people who create the atmosphere and daily life behind this internationally celebrated destination.
Through portraits and observations of beach workers, vendors, and residents, Whispers of the Sunlit Coast highlights those who often remain invisible within narratives of paradise. Many travel from distant favelas to make a living by providing services and creating moments of joy for visitors, transforming the beach into a place of exchange, survival, and connection.
The series also moves beyond Rio’s tourist centres to explore quieter areas on the city’s outskirts, where everyday life follows different rhythms and social relationships appear less shaped by tourism. Through these contrasts, Lang reflects on the complex realities behind idealized images of coastal life.
About The Artist
Kim Lang is a Luxembourg-born photographer whose work explores themes of identity, heritage, and cultural connection. Born to a Cape Verdean father and Luxembourgish mother, his perspective has been shaped by travel and by his grandfather, documentary filmmaker Willy Lang. Based in London, he works across editorial and commercial photography while developing long-term personal projects.
