The Joana Biarnés Scholarship awards €8,000 to a photojournalist under 35 to develop a project focused on underreported issues within Spain, with mentoring, equipment access, and exhibition opportunities.

Overview

The Joana Biarnés Scholarship supports emerging photojournalists in developing impactful visual storytelling projects that highlight underreported issues and pressing matters within Spain. The scholarship aims to empower young photographers to make visible stories that might otherwise go unseen in the national landscape.

The selected photographer receives an €8,000 grant to support the creation of their photojournalistic project, along with mentoring from an experienced tutor, access to temporary photography equipment, and opportunities for exposure through exhibitions and publications. Finalists benefit from a narrative journalism workshop and a subscription to an independent magazine focusing on visual journalism.

Practical Info

The scholarship is open to photojournalists between 18 and 35 years old who demonstrate a passion for storytelling through visual media. Applicants must submit a brief artist biography (maximum 150 words), a project statement outlining the submitted work (maximum 250 words), a completed application form, and a portfolio of 10 to 15 photographs in JPG format with a minimum resolution of 150 dpi in sRGB color space. All materials should be sent as a compressed folder to beca@fundacionpsv.org.

About Fundación PSV

Established in 2016 by Fundación Photographic Social Vision, the scholarship was created to honor Joana Biarnés, Spain's first female photojournalist. Initially launched as the Photographic Social Vision Grant for Photojournalistic Research, it was renamed in 2019 to commemorate Biarnés' legacy and her commitment to the highest standards of visual journalism, supporting the next generation of photojournalists dedicated to documenting stories that promote social awareness.
