KG+SELECT 2026 Open Call

Ten artists will be invited to exhibit their works and receive a grant of ¥200,000 to help cover the costs of producing their works.

Overview

“KG+SELECT” is an award branch within “KG+” which kicked off in 2019 as an open competition for photographers around the world. Selected artists will each receive a grant of ¥200,000 to help cover the costs of producing their works. A catalog of the exhibited artworks will be produced and the exhibition will be widely publicized via various media in Japan and abroad. 

The judges for KG+SELECT 2026 will visit the exhibits and select one Award winner. The prize recipient will receive an additional grant of ¥500,000 to support the creation of new work and to produce an exhibition for the official program of next year’s KYOTOGRAPHIE 2027.

Practical Infos

Artists and curators are eligible to apply, regardless of age, profession, nationality, or prior experience. Applications may be submitted by individuals or groups presenting photography, video, or installations that incorporate photographic elements. The choice of themes is entirely open. A wide range of artistic approaches is welcomed, including fine art, conceptual, contemporary, and documentary works. Submission must include text information, an exhibition floor plan, images of the artwork to be exhibited, and a recent photograph of the artist.

Applicants are responsible for covering all expenses related to their exhibitions, including equipment rental, printing, framing, use of projectors, and transportation of works in and out of the exhibition space. They are also responsible for monitoring the venue during the exhibition period. KG+ does not provide staffing assistance and cannot be held liable for any damage or loss.

Members of the KG+ judging panel will evaluate the exhibits and select one Award winner. The KG+SELECT Award winner will be announced at the KYOTOGRAPHIE x KG+ award ceremony in the first opening weekend.

About KG+

KG+ is a public art festival that first started in 2013 with the aim of discovering and supporting upcoming photographers and curators, with 2025 being the 13th anniversary of this festival. They strive to present the state-of-the-art skills of upcoming photographers widely enlisted here in Kyoto to around the globe. In cooperation with KYOTOGRAPHIE Kyoto International Photography Festival, they give upcoming photographers and curators participating in KG+ opportunities to talk and collaborate with world-renowned curators and gallerists from Japan and around the world.
