Getxophoto’s Open Call provides an opportunity for visual artists and photographers from all over the world to exhibit their work at the next edition of Getxophoto, to be held in June 2024. The theme to be addressed in the 18th edition is Play.

The open call invites artists to apply with proposals - using photography, installation, video, digital art or any other means of visual expression - that explore games and playing that challenge our thinking and question established ideas about this topic. Projects that investigate the significance of play in our lives, how play represents a world of freedom and learning, and why society limits it, are welcome to apply.

Practical Info

The call for entries is open to all emerging and established visual artists and photographers worldwide. The jury, made up of Arianna Rinaldo, Ana Casas Broda, Irene de Mendoza and María Ptqk, will select 12 shortlist projects and 3 winners. The latter will be part of the Getxophoto 2024 programme. The selected project will be granted a 400€ fee, accommodation and financial support for travel to the festival.

About Getxophoto

Getxophoto International Image Festival has been held in Getxo (Basque Country, Spain) for 17 years. The Festival brings to the city different proposals from visual artists from all over the world, establishing a contemporary conversation on the proposed theme each year. Getxophoto is characterised by the radical defence of public space (physical and online) as a meeting place, a place of mutual recognition and a field for experimentation, play and celebration in the face of its homogenization and privatisation. For this reason, most of its programme is made up of open-air installations, highlighting, on the one hand, the link between the image and the environment and, on the other, generating a more horizontal and participatory relationship with the public. From its transversal approach, Getxophoto has been expanding through the promotion of the Internet as a space for the development of visual culture. To this end, it runs an online programme that has included different approaches such as automated live processes, interactive websites, podcasts, apps, memes or WhatsApp groups among other proposals.
