Female in Focus x Nikon 2024

British Journal Of Photography is excited to announce the fifth edition of the Female in Focus award, in partnership with Nikon, a global leader in imaging technology.

Overview

Female in Focus celebrates the remarkable talent and creativity of women photographers from around the globe. This initiative seeks to promote underrepresented voices within the industry.

Despite growing awareness of gender inequality in the photography industry, change is slow. A survey conducted in August 2024 revealed that women in photography earn, on average, 30% less than their male counterparts, with 55% experiencing workplace gender discrimination. Furthermore, only 34% of major photography award winners in the past five years have been women. The Female in Focus Award seeks to address these disparities by empowering female photographers at all career stages to share their unique narratives. Through this initiative, the aim is to elevate underrepresented voices and challenge the status quo, in favor of a more equitable representation in visual storytelling.

Practical Info

The theme of this year’s edition is Renewal, delving into the transformative process of rejuvenation and rebirth. This theme captures the essence of starting anew, whether through personal growth, environmental restoration, or societal change. Through evocative imagery, it explores the beauty and strength found in moments of revival and regeneration, highlighting the hope and possibility inherent in beginning again.

The award is open to all women photographers, regardless of career stage. Participants can upload one portrait for free, while Full Access Members can submit up to 10 single images or one series to increase their chances. Required documents include a project description (max 250 words) and a portfolio of 8-12 images. For detailed submission guidelines, please refer to the award's website.

Two winning series will be exhibited as part of two group shows in the UK, while 20 single images and two series will be exhibited in a group show at 10.14 Gallery (London) and at Glasgow’s Gallery of Photography. Thanks to the partnership with Nikon, the photographers of the two winning series will also receive a Z Series mirrorless camera, along with two NIKKOR Z lenses of their choice.
