Encontros da Imagem is excited to announce that their annual portfolio reviews — with a jury of internationally and nationally acclaimed professionals in the photography field — are returning to the historic city of Braga in September 2024.

Overview

This Award offers a chance to meet with recognized commissioners, gallerists, curators and publishers, to present your portfolio, promote your work and receive valuable feedback and advice. The 32 selected photographers receive 8 individual review appointments, lasting 20 minutes each (10+10 minutes), and have the opportunity to influence who they meet with ahead of the reviews.

Practical Info

Applications until the 19th of May with up to 20 images per project. In this stage, a maximum of 32 portfolios will be selected. The criteria for the selection will be originality, coherence and conceptual quality of the projects. The finalists will be contacted individually by the organization in June. The entrance fee for this stage is €20. In the second stage, the finalist will have until the 15th of July, to have access to the 8 individual portfolio reviews with all critics, each review will be 20 minutes. The portfolio reviews will be held on the 19th and 20th of September in Braga. The entrance fee for this stage is €130.

The jury composed of Jens Friis, João Silvério, Michael Weir, Moritz Neumüller, Paulo Catrica, Trish Lambe, Wiktoria Michalkiewicz, and Xavier Canonne will be looking for the best contemporary photographic works, and will award the 1st place winner a prize of €3,000 and 2 Honorable mentions with €1,000 each. The winner will have a solo exhibition on the edition of 2025, as well. The festival will cover the production costs for the winner's solo exhibition. The conditions for the production of the exhibition will be agreed with the winner and the board of directors.

Encontros da Imagem, (founded 1987) with more than thirty years of existence, is a non-profit cultural association that promotes annually an International Photography and Visual Arts Festival in the city of Braga, Portugal. The festival celebrates classic and contemporary photography and visual arts in general by showcasing emerging and established artists and it is recognized worldwide as one of the most important photo festivals. Emergentes (Portfolio Review) looks to create a unique opportunity to the participants to reach an exhibition, a publication or just to improve their projects.
