The third edition of the Daniele Tamagni Grant, organised by the Daniele Tamagni Foundation in partnership with The Market Photo Workshop and Africa Foto Fair, is open for entries.

Overview

The Daniele Tamagni Grant brings together material and intellectual resources to address the creation of a long-term value programme focused on photography, photojournalism and education. The Grant is addressed to emerging photographers whose work engages with the African continent or its diaspora, without restrictions in terms of the applicant’s nationality.

Practical Info

Applicants must submit up to 25 images, a project description, a biography and CV. Plus, they have less than 5 years of professional experience as a photographer and have a proficient level of English language. The recipient’s language level will be evaluated during the last stages of the interview with the Head of Jury. Submissions will be reviewed based on the documentary and/or narrative skills of the applicant, and the authenticity, storyline, originality and overall quality of their presented portfolio. The submitted project must engage with the African continent or its diaspora, but there is no specific theme required.

The winner of the open call will receive a one year scholarship to attend the Photojournalism & Documentary Photography Programme (PDP) at The Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg (ZA), from end January 2025 to early December 2025, and a monthly stipend to support local living expenses. This year, thanks to the new partnership with Africa Foto Fair, the winner will also have the chance to showcase the body of work developed during the scholarship at Africa Foto Fair 2025 (Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire).

The jury is composed of Aïda Muluneh, Khona Dlamini, Chiara Bardelli Nonino, Marco Longari, Bindi Vora, Peggy Sue Amison and Christopher Udoh.

About Daniele Tamagni Foundation

Daniele Tamagni (1975-2017) was born in Milan and graduated in Art History. He elevated his passion for photography to a professional dimension in 2007, when he received the Canon Young Photographer Award, then followed by the ICP Infinity Award in 2010 and the World Press Photo Award in 2011. His works can be found in the collections of public institutions such as LACMA, Los Angeles, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Contemporary Photography Chicago and the Royal Pavilion and Museums of Brighton and Hove. Despite the severe health condition that marked the last four years of his life, Daniele became a leading photographer, harnessing his broad knowledge of art, his passion for style and fashion and his evident inspirational capacity to become a reference to generations of like-minded individuals.

The Daniele Tamagni Foundation has been established with two main aims: to preserve, value and promote the memory and the artistic legacy of Daniele Tamagni, and to encourage the development of young, talented photographers, able to contribute to social, cultural and political change through their creativity, freedom of expression and identification with the social milieu in which they live.
