The APhF Pick:24 Book Award is an annual juried competition open to all photobooks worldwide that were produced or published between January 2023 and March 2024.

Overview

By honoring outstanding photobooks, APhF acknowledges the pivotal role this medium plays in the contemporary art scene in pushing the boundaries of artistic expression and fostering an ever-evolving dialogue within the realm of photography and materiality. The shortlisted books are selected by a five-member jury, specialized in photobooks and photography internationally. The jury will convene in person in Athens to select the winner.

Practical Info

Applicants must submit using the online entry form, send 2 copies of their submitted book alongside their submission form, ensuring it is postmarked no later than 30 April 2024. Each photobook submitted requires the following information: photobook title, photographer name, year of publication, publisher, designer, editor information, short description, short biography, photobook dimensions, number of pages, edition number or print run, and an image of the photobook cover.

The photobook must be primarily photography-driven, whether in the form of new or archival images. The inclusion of other artistic disciplines is welcome, providing the overall work is focused on photography. All photobooks must have been physically produced between January 2023 – March 2024 to be eligible for submission (from any location worldwide). The photobook must be published in an edition of no fewer than 100 copies. Entries may only be submitted by the artist, the publisher or a third party with the written consent of the artist/publisher.

One winning photobook will receive a cash prize of €2,000. Plus, 10 selected photobooks will be part of the APhF Pick:24 exhibition at the Benaki Museum/Pireos 138 during APhF in June/July 2024, 10 selected photobooks will be profiled in the APhF print catalog, 20 shortlisted photobooks will be profiled in the open-access APhF Library. In addition, winners will receive recognition (exposure on the APhF website, social media channels and partner press publications). Shortlisted photobooks will be available for the public to purchase during APhF (upon agreement from the publisher and/or artist). All submitting artists will receive complimentary entry tickets to APhF:24.

The juries for this competition are Eduardo Cadava (Princeton University), Enri Canaj (Magnum Photographer and Albanian Center of Photography), Ioli Tzanetaki (curator at National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens), Fazal Sheihk (artist) and Sylvia Sachini (curator of APhF BP).
