Where the Living Ends Gently

For two years, while living in Alaska, Jason Own documented what it means to live beside loss. Dreamlike yet grounded, his resulting work weaves grief into the landscape and rituals of subsistence, tracing how communities remember, endure, and return.

In my early 20s, I found myself living in Sitka, Alaska, where I spent my days volunteering and eventually directing a nonprofit that placed companions at the bedside of individuals nearing the end of life. It was there that I experienced how grief alters perception: what you begin to notice, and what you can no longer say. I began photographing in response, both as a way to cope and to inquire. The camera offered a language for ambiguity—for the suspended, unfinished space between living and dying.

There is a haunting intimacy to this place. In Sitka, death isn’t just an abstract idea. It is handled, cleaned, gutted, skinned, and hung with care. Salmon stare back. The bears are not a metaphor. The ocean doesn’t flinch. Even a slight mistake—a slip on a rock, a misread tide, a fall into frigid water—can be final. However, survival here is communal. It is knowledge passed mouth to mouth, season to season, in the rituals of subsistence and the small acts of mutual care that keep people alive. 

This series is a meditation on how death lives beside us. It creeps through the fog, presses against windowpanes, and curls up in the snow. A figure lies bare on the ground, not quite dead, not quite alive, but again suspended. In this landscape, everything feels both sacred and exposed. 

But nothing here is purely documentary. These photographs operate in the register of collective memory: scenes that feel like dreams you shouldn’t have seen, or memories you never lived but still recognize. I was drawn to the eerie stillness of the everyday: the half-cracked windows, the skinned carcasses swinging in winter tents, the hollowed salmon heads laid out like little masks. These symbols are the vernacular of endurance, the evidence of a community learning again and again how to live with loss without looking away. 

Where the Living Ends Gently asks how grief and survival coexist, how care becomes a communal practice, and how a place holds memory in the rituals of everyday life.
