Where do we go when we dream? Is this place familiar? Does it feel normal? With these photos, I attempt to make sense of where we go every night when we close our eyes.

Do you remember where you were in your dreams last night? Do you remember what you were doing? Who were you with? Is it a clear image in your head, or a murky haze that clouds your memory?

No matter how vivid our dreams are, it can be difficult to recall what happened in them. Even if I write down what happened immediately after I wake up, remembering where I was in my dream manages to elude me. It often feels like the places I dream of are somewhat vague. A random parking garage. Maybe a room in a house, but it feels like somewhere I’ve never been before. You turn around in your subconscious haze and suddenly the setting has changed. Something is different. Familiar, but “off.”

In this project, I have gathered photos taken on an old iPhone 7 back in 2017 to photos from the past year on more serious digital cameras like the Nikon Z5 or the Fujifilm X100VI, and used these photos to help me rationalize where it is my mind goes at night.

The photo set mirrors itself from the first image to the last, met in the middle by the silhouette of a sea bird, an illusion in its flight as to where it is really going. Each image’s partner is slightly different than its counterpart. You turn around and something is different. Something has changed. What place have you gone? You ask yourself, where do I go when I dream?
