What the water gives/What the water holds explores water's power to restore presence and connection to nature. Shot on 35mm film, then returned to the water to gather sand and salt — made not just of nature, but with it.
What the water gives/What the water holds is a photography series that explores how being near, on or around water can enhance creativity, presence and our connection to nature.
Research has suggested that due to constant stimulation from our electronic devices, we have become more disconnected from nature than ever before.
Created on 35mm film to slow the act of photographing itself, I photograph the surface of the water which captures and holds our attention. After the film is developed, it is then placed back into the water in the same location the image was taken; to leave traces of sand, salt and the water itself. The result being two artworks, mine underneath and natures on top. The two works exist in conversation with each other; my image as a response to the water and the waters as a response to mine. One made in the act of presence and attention, the other in reciprocity. Together they bring the photographer and subject closer together. These are not just images of nature – they are made with nature.
