The Masai is the name given to a largely nomadic people in East Africa, living mainly in Kenya and Tanzania. I portrayed these people during two visits. they live in a small community in Northern Tanzania, called Mafuleta.
The Masai is the name given to a largely nomadic people in East Africa, living mainly in Kenya and Tanzania. The Masai managed to preserve their ancient traditions despite growing modern civilization. Due to various causes, such as the decline of grazing land for their livestock and drought, this traditional way of life is under severe pressure.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan (Mama Samia) wants to evict the Masai from the land of their ancestors to make way for luxury tourism and trophy hunting in Tanzania.
This comes at the expense of the indigenous people.
During September 2023 and May 2024, I visited a small village, a community where everyone seems to be related to each other and if you ask how old people are you get a bit of a strange look. Birth certificates they don't really know. There is no electricity and no running water in the huts and houses. There is no plumbing.
Ugali (corn porridge) is the favorite meal. With chai, tea with fresh milk and sugar.
Every Sunday there is an outdoor Christian church service, where especially the women and children sing, dance and make music. In their finest clothes.
There are many cows, goats, chickens, dogs and flies. The animals go out in the morning to eat and drink and return at the end of the day. They know the way home.
There is much respect for each other, the younger greets the older by offering his/her head
