Voices of Scotland

The project I am submitting is a creative exploration of witchcraft, paganism, and folk magical practices in Scotland: who they are, what they believe, and why it matters in an age of ecological crisis, political upheaval and technological advancement.

These images are part of a long-term documentary photography project that explores the different magical beliefs and spiritual paths of people in Scotland. The main objective is to create a photographic work that brings visibility to the many ways in which magical and spiritual practices in Scotland are expressed today.

I see this project as an act of cultural preservation and social education. It is an invitation to re-examine how we understand belief, identity and spirituality. I pursued this project now because we are living in times of ecological catastrophe, economical crisis and social fragmentation. I see people trying to find ways in meaning-making, and a growing interest in a connection with the natural world, our bodies and cycles. Many people are turning to magical and spiritual practices as a form to reconnect and reclaim power, power that has been stripped away by capitalism, corporations and colonialism. These practices offer healing, connection, resistance and empowerment, especially for those whose identities exist outside the mainstream. I believe that documenting these experiences offers cultural value and social relevance.

I have a great curiosity to understand what draws people to walk a magical and spiritual path in a secular, technological and scientific age, which prioritises logic and rationality. I perceive a fundamental human need to connect with otherness, the unknown and the mysteries of the mythical. These beliefs that have been historically erased and misinterpreted, deserve visibility. Through photography, I aim to demystify and dignify these experiences, offering a sensitive and real portrayal of the magical and natural world and those who embrace it.

I believe in the power of art to reinterpret imposed narratives, and contribute to collective healing. This project is, for me, an act of remembrance and empowerment for people. As an emergent artist, I am committed to continue to develop this work from an ethical, poetic and transformative way.
