""Units""
"Every city must have its basic compositional skeleton. The ideological content should be reflected in the form. In the search for a form that corresponds to the social content, however, the human scale must always be kept in mind. Bringing out the ideological tension is a fundamental task for us if we want to counteract capitalist tendencies to break up the city into isolated units, to weaken the bonds between its inhabitants, to give the city a semi-rural character."
Dr Waclaw Ostrowski,
The spatial shaping of the socialist city,
In „City". Warsaw January 1952
The series is a search for the symptoms of the persistent influence that the past, rooted in the wishful utopias of the communist system, still has on our lives.
After five decades of its existence in Poland, it is still present in the physical space, mentality and gestures of the people who make up an insecure society.
Rather, makeshift solutions turn out to be permanent, although the pragmatism- and functionalism-oriented present wants to take over the territory entirely for itself.
The juxtaposed scenes and portraits are a report on the constant interpenetration of these worlds, built from the anxiety awakened by events in Eastern Europe.
The rest of it, lives in relative calm - if I could continue the work, I would be interested in what manifestations the provisionality of life can be observed in it, to what extent it is dramatic and whether there is a possibility of a shared experience in this sense.
