Shortly before the end of China's strict COVID-19 policies, I traveled to Shaxi, Yunnan.
In this rare sanctuary without mask mandates, I was able to witness not only the beauty of the landscape under a clear sky but also the unobstructed smiles of the people. It felt as though I had encountered two kinds of brightness at once.
